Ashley Gibson | Episode #484
The Team Engagement Podcast, Season 6, Episode 484: Are You a “Principled” Leader?
In this episode, Shawn Richards welcomes Ashley Gibson, psychotherapist, advisor, speaker, and Founder of Meaning in Practice, for a conversation about principled leadership, psychological safety, burnout, and the systems that shape workplace behavior.
Ashley draws from her experience as a former executive and current psychotherapist to explain that teams have a nervous system of their own. Leaders influence that system through what they repeatedly model, reward, and tolerate. Psychological safety grows when a leader’s actions reflect the values they communicate.
Shawn and Ashley discuss the gap between intention and impact. A company may say it values flexibility and healthy boundaries, but employees receive a different message when leaders send emails late at night or consistently reward overwork. Ashley encourages leaders to examine whether their behavior supports the culture they claim to want.
The conversation also explores principled leadership through the example of Ashley’s grandfather, who served in the Marine Corps and later held a senior role at the National Security Agency. His commitment to integrity, service, and living according to his values left a lasting influence on her approach to life and leadership.
Ashley explains that growth mindset requires leaders to examine the system rather than immediately looking for someone to blame. When something goes wrong, leaders can ask what patterns, incentives, or processes contributed to the outcome. This allows teams to learn from failure without turning every mistake into a personal judgment.
The conversation also addresses burnout and emotional wellness. Ashley challenges the idea that workplace burnout can be solved only through individual wellness practices. Leaders must also examine the organizational systems, expectations, and relationships that contribute to stress.
She closes with a meaningful baseball story about a man named Lou who signed a baseball for her as a child. Although she did not initially know his role within the Baltimore Orioles organization, his simple act of kindness became a lasting memory and reminder that meaningful impact can come from unexpected people.
