The Team Engagement Podcast – Season 6, Episode 487: Feedback Promotes Psychological Safety

In this episode, Shawn Richards welcomes Mike Moreau, President of Concord Consulting, for a conversation about psychological safety, feedback, continuous improvement, and how leaders can avoid becoming the bottleneck within their own organizations.

Mike explains that psychological safety starts by creating room for mistakes. When employees believe mistakes will be met with harsh judgment, they may become more likely to hide them. Leaders who instead treat mistakes as opportunities to learn create an environment where people feel safer experimenting, trying new approaches, and speaking openly when something goes wrong.

Feedback is another important part of that environment. Mike encourages leaders to regularly ask their teams what could be improved, whether after a meeting, client conversation, or another part of the workday. When leaders genuinely invite feedback and respond appropriately, they demonstrate that candid conversations are welcome. Over time, this can strengthen trust and make giving and receiving feedback a normal part of the culture.

Shawn and Mike also discuss the importance of being relentless about growth. Mike shares the example of the British cycling team's pursuit of getting 1% better every day. Small improvements may seem insignificant individually, but when practiced consistently, they can compound into significant progress.

The conversation then turns to emotional wellness and the pressure leaders often put on themselves. Mike warns against becoming the central point through which every question and decision must pass. Instead, leaders should select capable people, delegate effectively, establish accountability, and gradually work themselves out of unnecessary day-to-day responsibilities.

By doing so, leaders create space to step away when needed, continue learning, build relationships, think strategically, and take care of their own well-being. As Mike emphasizes, meaningful organizational change often begins when the leader is willing to change first.

He closes by sharing a tradition of watching baseball playoffs during annual hunting trips with his family in Alberta, one of the rare times when slowing down and enjoying a full game naturally becomes part of the experience.
